Steven S. Taylor has been giving the gift of music to students for the past thirty-five years, the past four at Fairfield High School as the Band Director for the Scarlet Brigade.  For the previous 23 years, he was the much-acclaimed Band Director of Sullivan Middle School in Fairfield.  A graduate of Humboldt State University, Mr. Taylor enjoys an unusually close rapport with his students.  For many, working with Mr. Taylor has engendered a life-long love of music through skills learned through his dynamic and comprehensive program.  Several of his students have gone on to significant careers in music.  The Braxton Brothers of Jazz, and Paul Armstrong, formerly a member of the Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau and now with the Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, DC, got their musical start with Mr. Taylor.

In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Taylor is a six year veteran of the mentor teacher program.  He has been Teacher of the Year at Sullivan Middle School and his programs have been featured in the District's Programs of Excellence.  Mr. Taylor was the recipient of the Gilbert T. Freitas Achievement Award for Outstanding Music Teacher in the Bay Area in 1990.  Since the 2003 - 2004 school year, Mr. Taylor has also served as the District Music Coordinator in addition to his duties as Band Director.  He maintains memberships in the California Teachers Association (CTA), The California Association for Music Education (CMEA), the Northern California Band Association (NCBA), and the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE).
